Renowned as the ancestral home of George Washington, the first President of the United States, Washington Old Hall is a historic manor house located in Washington, Tyne and Wear, England. The earliest reference to a hall on this site dates back over a thousand years, with the first stone building constructed around 1183 by William de Hertburn, who later adopted the name de Wessyngton (Washington), marking the origins of the Washington family name.
Today, Washington Old Hall is a popular visitor attraction, especially for American tourists, and is furnished to reflect its 17th-century appearance, with displays on George Washington and the hall’s history. Its gardens and interiors offer a glimpse into the life of the English gentry, and the site celebrates its transatlantic connection with events such as Independence Day and Thanksgiving.
