Oakenshaw Reserve was created on the site of a former surface coal mine operated by Banks Mining between 1991 and 1993. After mining operations ceased, the area was restored and transformed into a nature reserve, and now features three ponds, one with an island, and a network of footpaths. Over 41,000 trees were planted, including Scots Pine, Sitka Spruce, Larch, Sessile Oak, and various other species, creating diverse wildlife habitats.
