Hexham Abbey

A historic church founded by St Wilfrid in AD 674, Hexham Abbey is one of the oldest in the country. Built partly with stones from Hadrian’s Wall, it features rare Anglo-Saxon elements like the crypt and Frith Stool. The Abbey has endured Viking and Scottish raids, and much of its current Gothic structure dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries, it became a parish church and underwent significant restoration in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, Hexham Abbey is a Grade I listed building, celebrated for its remarkable heritage and active role in the community.
